23 marzo 1857 anni - Elisha Graves Otis installs the first passenger elevator

Descrizione:

During the 1800s, it became evident to most industrialist that an invention was needed to haul heavy freight to higher floors in buildings. Before 1853, elevators had been invented, but none of them were equipped with a safety mechanism that would prevent the elevator from falling if its cables malfunctioned. In 1852, the inventor and mechanic Elisha Graves Otis designed the first safety hoist for an elevator. In 1853, he set up an elevator business and sold his first safety elevator in September of that year. However, purchases were slow because people were afraid of the new technology, which they dubbed dangerous and unreliable. It wasn't until May of 1854, when Otis held a demonstration at the Crystal Palace in New York City, that elevator sales skyrocketed. In his demonstration, Otis was hoisted into the air by one of his own elevators and had the suspension rope cut. When the rope was cut, his safety hoist caught the elevator, demonstrating the effectiveness of his invention. On March 23, 1857, Otis installed the first elevator to be used for passengers, rather than cargo. This greatly helped the architecture industry, which was just beginning to build structures that were considered "skyscrapers."
