Chinese students demanded democracy and protested in large numbers in Tienanmen Square. To counter the desire for democracy, chinese officials ordered the army to attack protestor camps killing many and imprisoning demonstrators. This was in addition to the tottering eastern european communist governments. This further contributed to the downfall of communism and the end of the cold war.
