In Poland there were severe food shortages which led to riots. A witness to the riots, Lech Walesa lost his job after leading an anti-communist protest in 1976. Then, in 1980, Lech's fellow shipyard workers launched a strike that led the government to grant the strikers the right to form a free and independent trade union. Union activity spead throughout Poland forming an alliance called Solidarity. The communist government proposed a crackdown on Solidarity leaders, jailing leaders including Lech. Lech was granted the Nobel Peace Prize for his acts of courage. In 1988, there were new rounds of strikes and the communist government agreed to meet with Solidarity and scheduled free elctions for June 1989. Voters chose Lech Walesa as President in the free elctions.
