In 1585, Sir Walter Raleigh, half brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert, founded the colony of Roanoke in the Virginia Bay. He did so under the English crown. This colony disappeared under mysterious circumstances: their houses were taken apart, and the letters CRO- were carved into a tree nearby.
