Japan pressured the French government into allowing Japanese troops to occupy the northern part of French Indochina. In the following year Japanese forces occupied the entire country. To stop Japan from taking over more of Asia, the U.S cut off all sales of iron, and oil. Japan was almost completely dependent on the U.S. for its supply of oil. Without oil, Tokyo would have to abandon its war against China.
