A product of the Jeffersonian Democratic Republican revolution, it repeals the Federalist Alien law of 1798. This law puts the number of years of residency required for citizenship back down to 5 from 14. It encourages immigration to the U.S., which is a very important character of the U.S. both then and now. Current U.S. residency requirement, which affects people in my classroom everyday, is still 5 years.
