This election was the first in the U.S. to put an opposition party into power as a result of voting, peaceful transition of power has been a hallmark of the American political system in the 200 years since. Jefferson reversed several Federalist laws and practices but not all of them. Perhaps the most revolutionary reversals were to reduce the formality of the President of the U.S., cut spending to effect a much smaller military, eliminate the excise tax and rewrite naturalization laws. In principle he wanted to restore as much power to people reasonably possible and protect states rights.
