Three civil rights activists by the names of Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner, and James Chaney were abducted and murdered in June 1964. The men were first investigated as a missing person case, but 3 days later their burnt-out car was found and two months later their bodies were found. Forty years later, Edgar Ray Killen, was charged for the murders by the state of Mississippi.
