Medgar Evers was shot in the driveway outside his house in Jackson, Mississippi. The shooter was the white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith. Beckwith was tried twice by and all-white jury and found innocent. Three decades later, he was tried again by a mixed-race jury and found guilty of murder. At the age of 73, he was sentenced to life in prison.
