On September 24 , President Eisenhower sent troops to Little Rock , Arkansas. The federal troops were to open the way for the admission of nine African American pupils to Central High School. This marked the first time since the reconstruction era that the Federal Government used its ultimate power to compel equal treatment of the African Americans in the South.
