Founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, CA, following Malcom X's death, their early activities included monitoring police activity in black communities in Oakland and other cities. Over time, as they instituted a variety of social and political programs, their party grew to be very popular. They drew widespread support from urban centers with large minority groups, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia.

By 1958, the Black Panther Party had over 2,000 members nationwide.
