SG decided to participate which strained the relationship between the PAP and the Alliance Party in KL, and the PAP questioned the way the Alliance Party governed Malaysia and promised to build a Malaysia that would not be governed by racial lines. PAP only won 1 seat but Alliance leaders were unhappy and the UMNO decided to focus on winning back Malay vote in SG since many Malays were discontent by the little improvement in their economic position. UMNO leaders accused the PAP of neglecting Malays in SG, and spread anti-PAP sentiments through the Utasan Melayu, with allegations that Singapore Malays were being treated as second class citizens and accused PAP of placing greater emphasis on Chinese education than Malay education.
