The Panama Canal opened on August 15, 1914. This was just weeks after the start of WW! in Europe. The Canal was important to history because it connected the Atlantic and Pacific oceans which provided a shorter route than sailing all the way around South America. The reduced the travel time and fuel costs for trade around the world. It played a big role in the economy by helping for more efficient transport of goods. The canal provided significant amounts of profit for the US when they had the right to the land. France was the first country to attempt to build this canal but the project was left abandoned in 1889 by France due to disease outbreaks and financial struggles.
