It was a massive surprise attack on the Western Front aimed at breaking the stalemate. Known as Operation Michael, it targeted British and French lines near the Somme, using heavy artillery get through defenses. They successfuly gained significant ground—up to 60 kilometers in places—but exhausted German supplies and manpower.
