The Byzantine Emperor Alexius I asked Pope Urban for military assistance when the Seljuk Turks invaded and took nearly the entirety of Asia Minor from him. At the council of Clermont, Urban addressed a large crowd and urged all to go to the aid of the Greeks and to recover Palestine from the rule of the Muslims. This event is crucial to European history as this request set forth the beginning of the First Crusade.
