Count Orsini (Italian nationalist) attempts to assassinate Napoleon III, an event known as the Orsini affair. Orsini hoped Napoleons death would spark a republican revolution in France although this could be a gamble. The attack failed killing eight and wounding 150 but Napoleon remained unharmed

Gives Napoleon justification for helping Italian unficiation --> Orsini writes a letter apologising and asking for help from Napoleon
