Under Ba'athist dictator Bashar al-Assad, Syria erupts into a civil war opposing his oppressive regime. The Assad family has been in power since the 1970s maintaining one of the most oppressive regimes in modern times responsible for the use of secret Ba'athist police, discrimination against ethnic minorities, forced disappearances (abductions), extensive censorship, human rights violations, and war crimes.

As a part of the Arab Spring, pro-democracy protests form across the state, to which Assad responds with lethal force sparking a civil war between the regime and counter-insurgencies such as the Free Syrian Army. Anti-Assad forces receive arms from Qatar and Turkey, while pro-Assad forces receive financial and military support from Iran and Russia.
