Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survives an assassination attempt via drone strike which is suspected to be action taken by Iran in response to Mustafa's crackdown on Iranian supported militias and his strict policy of removing foreign influence, as well as the removal of pro-Iranian political parties from parliament that year.

Following a political crisis instigated by the attempt on his life, Mustafa chooses to vacate his position as Prime Minister hoping to ease tensions and push for government coalition.
