The US troops cease combat operations in Iraq after seven year of combat and the death of 4,400 US troops and tens of thousands Iraqi civilians. The remaining 50,000 US troops left to train Iraqi forces are expected to be withdrawn by 2011, however, concerns grow and violence upticks following the March 2010 parlimentary elections.

It will take a total of 9 months following the elections before a coalition government is formed under Prime Minister Maliki with Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, as President. Additionally, Maliki appoints several rival Sunni politicians to roles in government. Despite a power-sharing agreement with former Prime Minister Ayab Awalli, whose party won a majority of seats, one never takes place, creating tensions.
