Uncle Tom was a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, a famous American author. The book would become the second best-selling piece of literature of the 1800s, behind the Bible. The novel told the story of a kind and ever-patient slave, confronted with a harsh and cruel slaveholder, and detailed the methods used to eventually escape the harsh conditions of a slave. The book instantly became a best-seller, and it sparked debates, discussion, and controversy among both the North and South. The North claimed that the book was a true depiction of life as a slave, and used this publication to further propel their argument, meanwhile the South pleaded the opposite, saying that the book simply isn’t true and that the life of a slave was still much better than that of an industrial plant worker in the North. No matter what side people were on, it was clear that the publication of this novel played a significant role towards the build up of the Civil War, creating arguments over whether the book was truly representative of the life of a slave.
