Marking the beginning of the Gulf War, Iraq, under the leadership of Saddam Hussein, invades the country of Kuwait in search of oil, annexing it for the next 7 months. Much of the world condemns these actions and urges them to withdraw, however, Iraq defies these requests.

The UN places an embargo on Iraq, restricting trade with other countries.
