During Ramadan, the Iraqi branch of the Ba'ath Party, a socialist political organization established in Syria to create a unified Arab state, overthrows Prime Minister Abdul-Karim Qasim. US involvement with the coup is suspected, as evidence suggests CIA support of the Ba'ath Party for planning and carrying it out.

The new regime that takes over is seen as brutal and chaotic, resulting in the capture, torture, and execution of thousands of Qasim loyalists, as well as a large amount of fighting within its ranks. After 9 months, the regime would be overthrown again.
