In 1955, the Communist nations sign the Warsaw Pact with Russia to defend each other if they are attacked. There is much suspicion between members of the Warsaw pact and the members of NATO. Both sides build up their armies and make more nuclear weapons. This state of tension is called the “Cold War.” The countries involved live in constant fear of a war more devastating than World War II.
