After establishing ideological differences, the PDPA splits primarily into two factions: the Khalq, under the leadership of Nur Muhammad Taraki, and the Parcham, under the leadership of Babrak Karmal. While both groups consider themselves the "true" PDPA and establish their roots in that of Marxism, they have differences that put them at odds.
