Gandhi (and his lieutenant, Nehru) and the Indian National Congress wanted to obtain independence from Great Britain, but Gandhi also rejected any forms of industrialization, and emphasized peace. However, one thing that prevented independence from happening was the problems between Muslims and Hindus and the suspicions that an entirely Hindu state would form. Muhammad Ali Jinnah wanted to separate India into places that were majority Muslim and majority Hindu. Reluctantly, the Indian national Congress gave in, beginning the partitioning of India, which resulted in over a million dying, and 12 million refugees relocated.
