Before the battle, the British (with General James Wolfe) were staying downriver from Fort Quebec, with the French (and General Marquis de Montcalm) staying inside, safe. Some time before the Battle, Wolfe fell dangerously ill, and his ranks were losing numbers because of disease. Desperate for some sort of advancement, Wolfe devised a plan that needed secrecy.
A couple people from Wolfe's army, as well as someone fluent in French, sailed upriver to the walls of Quebec. The French thought it was the supply ship they'd been expecting, unknowingly cancelled. The person fluent in French played it off quite nicely, and created a distraction, right there.
Meanwhile, the rest of the British army was climbing the steep cliff up to a plateau (the Plains of Abraham), nearby the Fort. only one person saw them and they tried to tell General Montcalm, but he didn't believe him.
By sunrise, the Brits had a solid foothold. When Montcalm noticed, he had two options. Wait for reinforcements, or attack the British. If he had chosen the former, the British would've been surrounded and cut off, and wouldn't have won. Though, he chose the latter, the worst decision of the war, because he was also annoyed.
When the French attacked, the Brits let them advance, already loaded with two musket balls. the French got off a volley, and the brits struck when they were reloading. They got scattered. the next shot sent them into retreat.
The British ended up taking Quebec, and won the war.
