The declaration of independence was a declaration that American colonies were independent from the British Empire. The declaration says that every person is created equal, which means that everybody, regardless of who they are, has the same rights. It is an important statement that shows that freedom and rights applies for everybody, and not just a few powerful people. Even though it is an important statement, this was not the case for the African slaves. When the declaration of independence was written, slavery was popular in the states. This made a huge contrast between the ideal about equality and the discrimination that slaves experienced.
