1 gen 700 anni - Woodblock Printing
Descrizione:
The earliest printing technology was the woodblock, made by carving a raised text or image into a piece of wood (Sington, 2020). After applying ink, the woodblock could be pressed onto a piece of paper, leaving behind a mirror-image of the carved design. This general format (raised text inked and pressed onto paper) is the basis of many later innovations in printing (Galbraith, 2020).
About the image: This image is of a page of a Chinese text from the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) entitled: “Materia medica for the relief of famines” (救荒本草). It contains a significant number of woodblock prints of medicinal plants, including the one pictured above (Library of Congress).
