Descrizione:

#3 Operation Blue Bat (1958) - Ellen A

On July 15, 1985, the United States launched Operation Blue Bat, a military intervention in Lebanon to support the pro-Western government of the president - Camille Chamoun. This intervention came to be as a response to growing internal uncertainty. The spread of pan-Arab nationalism led by Gamal Abdel Nasser sent fear into the US. The fear started when Chamoun was challenged with his rule, and controversial decisions to re-elect. The started a turmoil effect of U.S assistance leading to 14,000 Marines and paratroopers into Lebanon. Using Eisenhower’s Doctrine, it marked the first U.S military operation in the Middle East during the Cold War. The main goal was to prevent Lebanon from falling under Nasserist influence and maintain the region's stability. In October a political resolution was reached, Chamoun stepped down, and the troops went home. This Operation was significant because it demonstrated the U.S’s commitment to not allow Soviet influence to take over in the Middle East. It double backed and reinforced America’s role as a dominant power in the region. Lastly, it set a precedent for future U.S. involvement in the Middle East.
