The Austro-Prussian war, fought from June 14th to August 23rd 1866, was fought between the Austrian empire and the Kingdom of Prussia which each having their own various allies. Prussia was allied with the Kingdom of Italy, which links this conflict to the third independence war of Italian unification. This is because Italy, which wanted certain territories that were in Austrian control, decided to take advantage of its weakened position and aid Prussia. This war resulted in the dominance of Prussia over the German states, and a shift of power away from Austria and towards Prussian control. In the end, this war resulted in the dissolvement of the German Confederation, and was instead partially replaced by the unification of the northern states of Germany, known as a Kleindeutsches Reich, or small german kingdom. Additionally, Austria gave venetia to the kingdom of Italy.
