The Greater the Ignorance the Greater the Dogmatism
In the age of the internet two things are apparent. Information is readily accessible at the swipe of a finger and people refuse to utilize it. The reasons surrounding this phenomenon are probably many, but one that proves itself time and again is that living in one’s own bias is a much more comfortable state than admitting a mistake has been made. Some would rather tell bold faced lies to support their own beliefs and narrative than acknowledge contrarian evidence even exists.
In July Johnny Depp took on UK tabloid The Sun in court for having printed as fact that he was a wife-beater thanks to the accusations leveled at him by Amber Heard. The trial lasted three weeks and all manner of evidence (and lies) was exposed. Depp and Heard both took the stand to let their sides be seen and anyone who followed the extravaganza at even an arms length saw that while Depp presented a litany of tangible evidence, Heard presented a myriad of unintelligible story lines, conflicting dates and photographs, and a less than cooperative line of witnesses. Only two people really went to bat on her behalf; her sister Whitney and her friend iO Tillett Wright. While we still await the final verdict the scales appear to be heavily tilted in Depp’s favor.
Several interesting lines of thinking have come from this years long debacle. In 2016 Johnny Depp became an instant pariah thanks to the hands of #metoo and “believe all women”. No one thought twice, she accused and the world believed, his fate was effectively sealed by the mob. For years he stood by and accepted what had happened until The Sun made their grave mistake. They printed the headline ‘How Can JK Rowling be Genuinely Happy to Cast Wife-Beater Depp in Film?’ This was the opening of the floodgates. Depp took a stand and began to unleash his side of the story before also filing a defamation suit directly against Heard for an oped she published in the Washington Post in Dec 2018. When he began to recount the abuse he had suffered at her hands the media gave him little acknowledgement. Old stereotypes prevailed saying he should “man up” and that little ‘ol Amber could never have inflicted the types of injuries he was accusing. The hypocrisy was and continues to be astounding.
As the cases continue on, most of the public has shifted to his side. Thanks to the release of some incredibly damning audio tapes in which Amber admits to multiple abusive outbursts the tides have mostly shifted but the media at large seems reluctant to give up their narrative and instead has taken to either chastising him for ever suing in the first place and saying his career will suffer no matter the outcome (as if he should have continued to just take the further abuse and sit down quietly) or dug in their heels, continuing to support Amber in the face of overwhelming evidence and insurmountable lies from her.
While trying to fault him for standing up for himself is reprehensible, the doubling down on support for her is the most troubling. The transcripts of the UK trial are available in their entirety as is most of the evidence that was presented there, yet we still have those who say we shouldn’t choose sides (never mind the fact that they fully jumped on Heard’s train in 2016 without a second thought) or continue to cling to their outdated and out-evidenced personal beliefs that she is the victim and he the abuser. Johnny Depp has managed to tear down many a wall by declaring himself the victim of domestic abuse at the hands of a woman and de-stigmatized a fight that many men face on a daily basis, yet stereotypes persist and people concrete set in their ways refuse to acknowledge even the possibility that they were wrong about everything here.
It challenges the new feminist movement right to the core, the ones who chant “destroy the patriarchy!” And present females as simultaneously wilting flowers and a force to reckoned with. They seem only to want to be loud and condescending to anyone and anything that challenges this narrative, never minding how much damage they are inflicting on themselves in this process. By continuing to back Amber Heard, a not only admitted abuser but someone with multiple allegations of violence (including an arrest) and grotesque manipulation against her, they undermine the very essence of their own cause. Just because someone possesses XX chromosomes does not mean they are infallible, and when it is proven that they have committed atrocities against fellow humans, including other women, they should not be coddled and uplifted. The evidence should not be ignored and they should not be given a pass because of womanhood. They should and need be held accountable and everyone twisting themselves into knots to continue supporting Heard would be much better served by admitting they made a mistake and shining a light on not only the fact that women can be violent, but that jumping to any conclusion before all facts are available is an unsound course of action.
