On December 16, 1773, the American militia snuck aboard a British cargo ship, and began to throw tea into the Boston Harbor in retaliation to acts such as the Tea, Stamp, Townshend and Boston Port Acts, along with unfair taxes levied by the British. This cost the British an estimated 1.5 million pounds in today's money. This promoted acts of rebellion around Boston which eventually spread to the rest of the colonies.
