The timeline splits from the canon one after Severus tells Lily why she'd be different to him, then continues to explaining he felt trapped (due to his desire for a future the death eaters could give him and his fear of being ostracized by his own house) and was genuinely very sorry. This causes her to stop and listen, but she is still very upset with him. She questions him a lot about his 'love' for her. ("For how long?" "It would be creepy to say 'from the very start' wouldn't it?" "You've been in 'love' with me since you first laid eyes on me?" "Perhaps not love, perse, but there was definately a desire to be near you. I think i realized it was love when i was twelve.") She gives him a second chance, but warns if his love for the Dark Arts was greater than his love for her, she was leaving and never looking back.
