Following the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on March 3rd 2017, the release date of the Switch, Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a sequel to Breath of the Wild, on May 12th 2023. Both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom drastically changed what Zelda games are, creating fully open world experiences. New mechanics such as time slowing when firing a bow, or when dodging or rushing an enemy were introduced, and carried over into Tears of the Kingdom. There is also time manipulation of objects, fusing objects together, attaching them together and more. Breath of the Wild was a massive success, selling 32.05 million copies as of today, being the best selling Zelda game of all time. However its sequel wasn't as successful, selling 20.8 million copies so far, which is still a greater deal more than all the previous games.
