Description:

The settlers had been able to compromise their differences relatively well until there was conflict over the Ohio Valley. The French wanted to keep the area for trade, while the British moved westward into the territory. George Washington played a large role in the beginning of the war, since he was sent to negotiate with the French about withdrawal. A battle inevitably erupted at the fort and the French captured Washington’s fort, which then escalated into the Seven Years War. Key Concept 3.1.111
