Berlin Blockade/Berlin Airlift : 1948-1949 The Soviet Union encircled and blocked all connections of West Berlin to the Allied Powers, so the Allies used air support to deliver supplies to the people of West Berlin, rather than retreating out of the area. Destroyed Soviet hopes of stopping the creation of a West German state and eventually led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. (24 juin 1948 – 12 mai 1949)
