The Confederates March to Pea Ridge By the spring of 1862, the Union forces had pushed the Confederate army into northwestern Arkansas. On the night of On March 6, 1862, Confederate Major General Earl Van Dorn gathered his 16,000-man army to counterattack the Union near Pea Ridge.
The Battle of Pea Ridge Begins The next day, learning of Van Dorn's counterattack, 10,000 Federals in Brigadier General Samuel R. Curtis's army marched to meet the counterattack. The armies met at Elkhorn Tavern three miles south of the Missouri border. During the battle two Confederate Generals were killed Brigadier Generals Ben McCulloch and James McQueen McIntosh. The deaths of the two Generals slowed down the Confederate's momentum at the end of the day.
The Battle Comes to an End On March 8, 1862, after General Curtis assembled his army the Union counterattacked the Confederates pushing them back. Eventually the Confederates ran out of ammunition and they surrendered abandoning the battle field. The Union now had control of the border state of Missouri.
