French explorers Father Jacques Marquette,
who is best known because he traveled down
the Mississippi River and reported the first
accurate piece of data about the river, and Louis Jolliet,
who is best known for being the first person along
with Jacques Marquette to travel the Mississippi
River, entered Missouri.1782
Robert de La Salle, a French explorer
claims the Louisiana Territory for France.
Robert de La Salle is best known for canoeing
down the lower Mississippi River from the
mouth of the Illinois River to the Gulf of Mexico.1905

French also gave the territory to Spain under the secret
