1673 French explorers Father Jacques Marquette, who is best known because he traveled down the Mississippi River and reported the first accurate piece of data about the river, and Louis Jolliet, who is best known for being the first person along with Jacques Marquette to travel the Mississippi River, entered Missouri.
1782 Robert de La Salle, a French explorer claims the Louisiana Territory for France. Robert de La Salle is best known for canoeing down the lower Mississippi River from the mouth of the Illinois River to the Gulf of Mexico.
1905 The world's first gas station is built in St. Louis. At 420 South Theresa Avenue. It cost about 50 cents and could only fit one car.
1820 President James Monroe signed a proclamation on August 10, 1821 for Missouri to become the 24th state. The state capitol was located in St. Charles until a permanent location was designated.
1826 Missouri State Government permanently moved to Jefferson City after being in St. Charles. The capital building is still in Jefferson after 200 years.
1890 St. Louis’ Wainwright Building opened. One of America’s first skyscrapers, it was designed by Louis Sullivan. The main material of the building is steel.
1821 Missouri was admitted to the Union as the 24th state after Maine and before Arkansas.
1812 On 1812 the Missouri Territory is established when it split from the Louisiana Purchase along with Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma and parts of Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. French also gave the territory to Spain under the secret Treaty of Fontainebleau.
1944 Harry S. Truman born in Lamar, Missouri becomes President of the United States. He was the 33 president. After, Franklin D. Roosevelt and before Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Construction on one of the most recognizable structure the Gateway Arch, in St. Louis is completed.
1804 Meriwether Lewis, the co-leader, and, William Clark, and their group of 40 men started off on their journey to the Pacific Ocean. It took them one year six months and one day to reach the Pacific Ocean.
