7th April 1948: The Marshall Plan The US will provide for European countries in need, to prevent the spread of communism.
24th June 1948: The Berlin Airlift (Operation Vittles) A military plan devised to supply the deprive citzens of Soviet East Berlin with supplies such as coal and food following the Blockade of the Soviets.
4th April 1949: NATO Alliance of 18 countries that will defend eachother in the event of an attack.
3rd July 1945: US, France, Britain and the USSR occupy zones of Berlin
17th July 1945: Potsdam conference begins in Germany
6th August 1945: US drop A-bomb on Hiroshima
12th August 1945: US drop A-bomb on Nagasaki
5th May 1946: Civil war in Greece between British-backed monarchists and the communists.
16th August 1945: USSR & Poland sign treaty accepting Soviet-Polish frontier.
11th November 1945: Josip Tito & National Front wins elections in Yugoslavia
1st January 1946: Polish industrial enterprises employing more than 50 workers are nationalised.
2nd February 1946: US military establish government of Syngman Rhee in South Korea
12th March 1947: Truman doctrine President Truman declares that the US would support any country facing communist subversion through military and economic aid.
25th June 1950: Korean War Begins After Communist North Korea invaded South Korea, the US helped stop the takeover of Korea by communism.
24th August 1939: Nazi-Soviet Pact signed.
12th April 1945: President Roosevelt dies, replaced by Truman.
4th February 1945: Yalta Conference. - Roosevelt/Stalin/Churchill (THE BIG THREE)? - What would happen after the war? - What to do with Germany after it was defeated? - Establishment of the United Nations Organisation. - Getting the USSR to enter the war against Japan. - The future of Poland - Free Elections - Declaration on liberated Europe.
5th March 1946: Churchill delivers Iron Curtain speech. In Missouri, Churchill delivers a speech declaring that Europe had been divided by an 'Iron Curtain', meaning the Soviets extended their influence to the west and were not permitting democracy in the east. Truman realised that without US assistance, Europe was at risk from communist expansion. The majority of Europe was economically crippled following the war and needed help.
22nd February 1946: Long telegram is received. Telegram from American Diplomat in Russia to Truman explaining that the USSR could not be negotiated and a tougher stance was needed. Convinced Truman that the way to deal with the soviets was a containment policy. A strategy intended to prevent the USSR from expanding.
