10 févr. 1803 - Louisiana Purchase
Description:
Jefferson wished to make all the positive changes he could for the nation, and one he felt needed to be made was the Louisiana Purchase. Louisiana was acquired by France from Spain in a treaty in 1800. Jefferson was nervous about French control in the states and wanted to buy the land to regain control of the area. There was no presidential right to purchase land in the Constitution, but Jefferson continued with the deal. He offered Napoleon ten million for New Orleans and the land just east of the city. Napoleon sold all of Louisiana for fifteen million dollars. Key Concept 4.3.1
