13th,14th and 15th Amendments (6 dic 1865 año – 3 feb 1870 año)

Descripción:

The 13th (1865), 14th (1868) and 15th (1870) Amendments pertain to the rights of African Americans directly following the Civil War, and were crucial for the future of the Civil Rights Movement in America. The Thirteenthth Amendment is arguably the most important as it officially abolished slavery in all states, and was the cause of huge economic and social implications for the country -as a direct result of this amendment, former slaves and African Americans gained new political opportunities. Thereafter, the Fourteenth Amendment gave official citizenship and equal protection under the law for all freed slaves, with its first section also proclaiming a birthright citizenship as well. This, however, was later overturned by the Dred Scott Decision. Finally, the Fifteenth Amendment ensured all male suffrage when it granted African american men the right to vote and Congress the power to pass legislation to enforce this right. However, this amendment specifically caused a split in the Women’s Rights Movement, as some members would not support the law unless it also included women. All three occurred in quick succession to each other, as part of the Radical Reconstruction plan of the Radical Republicans; due to the progression from slavery to freemen’s rights occuring in such a short time period following the war, the South continued to be defient by passing Jim Crow Laws and threatening Southern freemen by means of hate groups (KKK) to discourage their voting. The Supreme Court also clashed with the ideas of the Radicals, as several Civil Rights Cases continued to support segregation until the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s.
