Tony Stark is captured by the Ten Rings, led by Raza and working secretly for Obadiah Stane.

Because the bomb that injured him embedded several pieces of shrapnel dangerously close to his heart, surgeon Ho Yinsen operates for some time to remove the shrapnel, though he is unable to remove them all and uses a car battery-powered electromagnet to keep the remaining pieces of shrapnel from reaching his heart. Immediately after the operation, the Ten Rings film the reading of a ransom note to Obadiah Stane, explaining that the price to kill Tony Stark has increased because they now know it is him they're being paid to kill.

Stark later wakes up in a room with Yinsen, a fellow captive of the Ten Rings, who explains the reason for the electromagnet in his chest. Ten Rings member Abu Bakaar enters the room and orders Stark to rebuild the Jericho Missile. Stark refuses, so he is tortured repeatedly until he gives in.

The Ten Rings has an incredible supply of Stark Industries weapons, which Stark finds out when he is brought outside of the cave he is being held in. Among these weapons are the materials Stark will need to build the Jericho Missile, which they supposedly have enough of. Stark is promised to be returned home when he finishes building the weapon, but Stark knows he will not be, and instead works to build a powered suit of armor for him to use to escape.

Stark's first action is to build a miniaturized arc reactor to replace the car battery powering the electromagnet in his chest, as he has to carry the car battery around everywhere he goes. It will also be used to power the suit he plans to build and use to escape.

Over the next two and a half months, Stark and Yinsen work to build the suit of armor, under the guise that they are in fact building the Jericho Missile as the Ten Rings demanded of them. They pass their time when not working by playing board games, during which Yinsen talks to Stark about his home in Gulmira.
