The war was a war of withdrawal from a larger group such as a country. The southern states wanted to break away from the rest of the United States, because of the disagreement about slavery. The southern states heavily relied on slavery for labour and economic growth. Britain declared itself neutral in the war. The Northern states won, with more than 600 000 American shoulders killed.
