The U.S. militarily helped South Korea when it was invaded by communist North Korea. This conflict was the first violent one during the Cold War, a direct fight by the U.S. and other NATO countries against communism. Eventually the war would “end” with a ceasefire agreement, but the war was never officially resolved.
