Early Modern Period (1 ene 1485 año – 1 ene 1660 año)
Descripción:
The reign of Henry VII marks the beginning of the Early Modern Period. He increased the strength of the monarchy through exerting focused control over the nation. Henry VIII followed shifting the religious culture of the country dramatically. He was lacking a male heir resulting in his desire to divorce his wife Catherine of Aragon. The pope of the Catholic church denied his request resulting in a religious separation. Edward VI fulfilled the need of a male heir; however, his reign was cut short by his illness. Mary I claimed the throne to return England to its Catholic roots. Elizabeth I moved England in the opposite direction by firmly asserting her Protestant beliefs. The religious tension was not solved by her reign, but she temporarily suppressed the religious struggle through her tactful policies. She achieved great success in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 which displayed her ability to be a militant leader despite her gender. Elizabeth opened society to the art of theatre by the building of the Globe Theatre which provided intriguing productions of Shakespeare’s plays. After that, the Protestant James VI of Scotland became James I of England. Amid his reign, the English colony of Jamestown was established in the Americas. However, James I did not possess the same authoritative power as Elizabeth I which permitted unrest to grow among the people. Charles I’s dismissal of Parliament heightened the spiritual conflict as well as the animosity between England and Ireland until it erupted into the English Civil War. The Early Modern Period was a time of military growth, innovation in the arts, religious tension, and colonial exploration.
