The Underground Railroad was a network of people (many African American) offering shelter and aid to escaped slaves to hopefully get to freedom in the north. Operated anywhere from the late 18th century to the end of the Civil War. The Underground Railroad was formed as a convergence of various clandestine efforts at the time.
