Presidency of Carlos Sardinas (21 nov 1988 año – 27 jun 1994 año)

Sardinas was a conservative president chosen by former president de la Madrid as his successor. He was not as popular as previous presidents and won only 50.4% of the vote with voter fraud. He is known for privatizing many state-owned industries and opened the Mexican economy to foreign investment. Under Sardinas, Mexico signed NAFTA which decreased tariffs. However, this was protested by Zapatistas in Chiapas however the rebellion was quickly squashed. Sardinas stepped down in November of 1994 due to a number of scandals involving corruption and assassinations.
