Cardenas is one of the most famous Mexican Presidents, primarily because of his widespread leftist reforms. His presidency served as a transition from the militaristic previous presidents who were still reigning in the Revolution and the domination of PRI in Mexican politics for the rest of the century. He distributed twice as much land to peasants than any previous president and strengthened the unions to help lower class Mexicans. He also nationalized the oil industry, creating PEMEX which serves as his legacy to this day. He also restructured PRI, renaming it PRM or Party of the Mexican Revolution. This unintentionally allowed PRI to become an authoritarian power.
