The Taiping Rebellion was a massive civil war between the Taipings, originating in Guangxi led by Hong Ziuguan against the Qing government. Xiuquan viewed himself as the brother of Jesus and the Manchu Qings as followers of Satan - he saw it as his divine right to drive them out. They drew many impoverished peasants with their creed of equally shared property and created a new religion ("God Worshippers’ Society"). Lasting from 1850 to 1864, their rapidly increasing numbers allowed them to take the city of Nanjing in 1853, but they faced difficulties with organization and their numbers. Eventually the Qing, led by knowledgeable governors, slowly gained an advantage, though they failed to take Nanjing for over a decade. After teh Arrow Wars, the Europeans joined the Qing in fighting the Taiping, and the money and advanced weaponry they contributed led to the rebellion being put down in 1864. It had cost between 20 and 30 million deaths.
