In D block, the last remaining cells on the bottom row were specially designed for solitary confinement. That is where the most dangerous criminals on Alcatraz spent most of their time. The bottom picture is a photo taken in the C block when the prison was open. C block is known for housing the most infamous criminal on Alcatraz, Robert Stroud a.k.a. “Birdman”. This picture represents the time when Alcatraz was a federal penitentiary for the most dangerous criminals in San Francisco (Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy).
